Java and i (Part 1) – How to Connect Spring Boot to the IBM Db2 for i Database

Introduction

This is the first part of a series of technical articles about Java and IBM i integration, called “Java and i” (yes, some pun intended). We will explore running Java applications on IBM i and leveraging the integrated IBM Db2 for i database.

So Initially, we will use Spring Boot and Spring’s ecosystem. Later, we will use Java EE MicroProfile, particularly IBM WebSphere Liberty. In the meantime, we will see how to call IBM i native programs (either Cobol or RPG) from a Java application. In addition, we will also see how to call Java from an RPG program. Expect to have lots of code, commands and to roll up your sleeves.me time ago, I started on this Agile journey at Fresche. Agile was something that I read about only in school, and had never put into practice in my IT career. My SDLC experience was strictly the Waterfall Model. I have to admit, the first two times, I didn’t get Agile. I remember an Agile coach saying to me, “just keep it simple”, and my response was, “but I can’t change it now, we’ve already set it up this way”. It was a long and complicated project. Needless to say, we should have done some things differently. Always easy in hind sight.
